Today, the Masters Tournament is universally recognized as one of the four major championships in professional golf. Every April, the world’s best players travel to Augusta National Golf Club to compete for the iconic Green Jacket and a place in golf history. But the Masters wasn’t always considered a “major.” In fact, its path to becoming one of golf’s most prestigious championships developed gradually over several decades.

Let’s take a look at how the Masters evolved from a new invitational tournament into one of the sport’s four major championships.

The Beginning: The Augusta National Invitation Tournament (1934)

The Masters was first played in 1934, but it wasn’t originally called the Masters Tournament. The inaugural event was named the Augusta National Invitation Tournament, created by legendary amateur golfer Bobby Jones and investment banker Clifford Roberts.

After Jones completed his historic Grand Slam in 1930, he retired from competitive golf and turned his attention to building Augusta National Golf Club. Jones and Roberts wanted to create a prestigious annual tournament that would attract the best players in the world to their newly built course.

The first tournament was held in March 1934, with Horton Smith becoming the inaugural champion.

At the time, however, the event was simply another professional tournament on the calendar and not yet considered one of golf’s most important championships.

When the Name “Masters” Was Adopted

Although Bobby Jones initially preferred the original name, the tournament was officially renamed The Masters Tournament in 1939.

By that point, the event had already started gaining prestige thanks to several factors:

  • The involvement of Bobby Jones, one of golf’s most respected figures
  • The unique beauty and challenge of Augusta National
  • An invitation-only field featuring many of the world’s best players

Even so, the concept of “major championships” was still evolving during this era.

The Early Concept of Golf’s Majors

Before the Masters gained major status, professional golf’s biggest championships were generally considered to be:

  • The U.S. Open
  • The Open Championship (British Open)
  • The PGA Championship

For many years, those three tournaments were viewed as the primary professional championships. The Masters had prestige, but it took time before it was widely recognized alongside them.

Part of the reason was tradition. The other tournaments had been established for decades before the Masters was created.

When the Masters Became Recognized as a Major

By the 1940s and early 1950s, the Masters had clearly grown into one of the most important events in golf. Its reputation for elite competition, combined with Augusta National’s mystique, elevated it to the same level as the sport’s other top championships.

Golf historians and media outlets generally recognize the early 1950s as the period when the Masters became firmly established as the fourth major championship. By then, the modern set of majors was widely accepted as:

  1. The Masters Tournament
  2. The PGA Championship
  3. The U.S. Open
  4. The Open Championship

Unlike other majors that rotate courses, the Masters quickly distinguished itself by being played at the same venue every year—Augusta National Golf Club. This consistency helped build traditions, iconic moments, and legendary holes such as Amen Corner.

Why the Masters Quickly Became One of the Game’s Most Prestigious Events

Several traditions helped elevate the Masters to major status:

The Green Jacket
Introduced in 1949, the Green Jacket became one of the most recognizable trophies in sports.

Invitation-Only Field
Unlike many tournaments, the Masters carefully curates its field, ensuring that only elite players compete.

Course Tradition
Augusta National’s iconic holes have created unforgettable drama over the decades, such as Rae’s Creek and the 12th at Golden Bell.

Historic Champions
Legends like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Tiger Woods, and Phil Mickelson all helped cement the tournament’s importance through their victories.

Today, winning the Masters is often considered one of the greatest accomplishments in golf.

The Masters Today

Nearly a century after its founding, the Masters remains one of the most anticipated events in sports. The tournament signals the unofficial start of the golf season and brings fans from around the world to Augusta each spring.

From the ceremonial opening tee shots to the final putt on Sunday evening, the Masters combines tradition, history, and elite competition in a way no other event can replicate.

And while it may not have started as a major championship, the Masters has undeniably earned its place among golf’s greatest tournaments.
